I removed all 3 carbs and cleaned and installed new carb kits on my 1994 3 cylinder 90hp Mercury and the Mercury factory service manual says to torque the 4 nuts and 2 lower bolts which retain the carbs/air box plate to 45 ft-lbs. This seems to be way too much torque to me and I am thinking 45 ft lbs is a typo. Any advice or feedback?? I also checked Seloc but could not find anything there either. Much thanks if you know the proper torque for retaining the carbs on this model.

I have an '02 of that engine and have done it and carbs on engines over the years and never more than moderate pressure on a 4" boxed end wrench. I agree. Too tight for 45 ft-lbs especially since you are screwing into an aluminum casting...the intake manifold. What I do sometimes in dry gaskets of the sort is to tighten it up as above and go off and do something else for 10ish minutes and come back and do it again. If your return trip yields no results, you got her tight. If you got a little more on some of them you should be good to go.

I have the same motor and have never torqued the nuts when putting the carbs back on.
