sorry for the long post/question but here goes,
Last fall I was having problems with my motor not running at full power. I brought it to a family friend who is very very knowlegable in fixing all types of outboards. He said I have a scored ring due to the vro system. According to him when running at idle the oil mixture with the vro is only about 100:1 and doesn't reach 50:1 until nearly full throttle causing the scored ring and loss of compression. He tested the compression and one was at 150 and the other at 120. He says this is a common problem with this motor. He recommended I disconnect the gas/oil hose and attach a 6 gal tank with a 50:1 mixture to see if that helps before doing anything major. Any of you out there had this happen or have any imput on my situation? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

this is my recommendation,

VRO still working.

To convert a still working VRO, disconnect the wiring harness to the VRO pump, also the harness to the oil tank.
You actually remove oil tank for more storage.

Now cut the oil line about 1 ? inchs from motor. Plug the oil line. I use a bolt and hose clamp.

Premix your fuel 50:1 TC-W3 outboard oil.

Disconnect fuel line to top carb, pump primer bulb, until you get mixed gas out of carb line. The gas will change color.

Connect carb line, go boating.

also when done, do decarb on the motor.
