What would be the setting on the tachmeter for my motor (5 or 6)?
It is a '94 40HP E40EERE motor.

Is there a thread or link in the net to get this info?
When did manufacturer switch to 12 pole generators?

My 1989 40 hp Johnson is set at 5,because my motor has a 10 pole stator. So providing there was not a change in the stator for your year,I would guess set it at 5.The number setting goes by how many poles your stator has.

To harlan_ss: Most helpful my friend, thanks.

To javsam: According to what harlan_ss has posted here, you should change your tacho to 6p and (like myself) find out that you're running your motor way beyond the WOT range 5500-6000rpm were it should run !!!

Your posting doesnt make any sense,as I said, you most likely have a 10 pole Stator. Therefore your setting needs to be at 5.Not sure why your assuming I am operating beyond WOT,which I am am not,I am at 5400.Your post is about your motor, not mine.

Well i am lost here.

post #3 has a link to a TELEFLEX document which wants both our motors 1989 and 1994 to have a 12 pole genegator and tacho setting 6p under the "All other 2 cylinder" option.

post #6 has a link to another TELEFLEX document which wants both our motors 1989 and 1994 to have a 10 pole generator and setting 5p under the "Less than 70HP (2 culinder, 2 stroke)" option

Re: 1994 40HP evinrude OMC tachmeter

Tested with an oscilloscope on the spark trigger terminal on coil. I get .03ms between sparks while tacho setting at 6p and reading 2000rpm and that verifies that it is a 12 pole alternator. Also on second channel i get 6 clear pulses feeding to tacho terminal.

Have also found link below:

http://www.maritim.no/pdf/2/Velg riktig turteller (utenbords).pdf

So all 40 & 50HP 2-stroke 2-cylinder 1993 and later have a 12 pole alternator and all earlier models have a 10 pole alternator.

So there !!!
