I have a 1994 force 40 hp and think I have a possible cooling problem. I just replaced the water pump housing impeller with metal plate. Inspected the lower untit seals and midsection. Everything seems to be in place and servicable. I start the motor on ears and ran it for about 10 minutes. A mist is coming out of the exhaust. The motor seems to run great, but I put my hand on the mid section where the exhaust is spitting water, and it seems be hot. Is this normal.

Could be your muffs aren't sealing properly.

Did you re-install the impeller key? If you didn't the impeller won't spin on the shaft.

Your cooling ports could be clogged if the motor was used in salt water. You can easily remove the head to inspect the ports and if they need cleaning just scrape the gunk out with a long skinny tool. You will need to replace the head gasket to do this. I would replace the head gasket anyways and re-torque the bolts periodically since they seem to vibrate loose over time on these motors.

If you want to check and see if the motor is overheating place your hand on the head instead of the midsection. If its too hot to hold your hand on it for a few seconds then its overheating.
