Motor idles at 1200-1300 rpms. Carbs are clean. I cannot find any leaks. Idle timing is set at 4 degrees atdc. Throttle plates are closed. On initial start-up and motor is cold it does ok (800 rpms after "quick start" lets idle come down). After I drive the boat for a while and return to neutral it acts like the "quick start" feature is still engaged. I can stop motor and restart and rpms remain at 1200-1300. Motor makes a loud "clunk" when shifting into gear. Any ideas on how to get rpms down?
Engine Model Number E225STLERC.

Thanks

Yes, motor has thermostats in. Water pressure is good. Could thermostats be suspect?

The timing advance might be sticking and causing the high idle.

Dhadley and BK 68,
I went back and checked butterflies again. Turns out they were cracked open so slightly that you could not tell by looking. When I loosened the linkage I could tell that they had closed completely. I took boat to the lake and it runs and idles like a charm. Looks like I learned a lesson.

Thank You for your help!
