Hi there, I have an 1994 evinrude 200hp, with ear muff I get 2000 rpm at idle, and when I got to the boat ramp I get 1000 rpm and it idles really good and will never go off, but If I bring the rpm down with the ear muff to a 1000 rpm at idle, when I go to the ramp I get below 200 rpm at idle and the motor will go off after a while. Can anyone tell me what the idle adjustment for this motor is? On the air intake cover there are 6 screws each for one carburetor, I think that is for air idle adjustment any idea how many turns on does screws? Any help I will really appreciated.
Thank you

Re: 1994 Evirude 200hp RPM to High

I just went through this same problem last month with my 1993 200hp when I installed new cables and did the carbs.

The mannual says to set the idle speed at 750rpm (+ or - 50rpm) under a light load. This made my motor run in the water at idle about 1200 rpm, but that rpm reading does not mean a thing because it should be adjusted with a light load (i.e. moving at no wake speed.)

The screws are indead air bleed idle screws. The mannual says to turn the screws closed to lightly seat them and then open them 2 turns as a starting setting. I had to close mine down and richen up the mix to get mine to shift from idle to forward without choking the motor off. I ended up at 1 1/4 turns off the seat for each screw.
I hope this helps.

eula...ALL outboard engines idle higher on muffs....why? Cause there is no backpressure against the cylinders. That's why you ALWAYS set the idle with the engine in the water. The water is what causes the backpressure. Put the engine in the water and THEN set the idle in gear according to specs. Muffs are only good for preseason starting and winterization.....nothing more.

There is a gizmoe you can buy , called an outboard exhaust muffler that you can install, while on land and running on muffs. Wet Marine has them and others too.

It quites down the motor during flush, and provides much more back pressure than without it.

BUT NOT MEANT TO SET FINAL IDLE RPM.

my 86 225hp evinrude will idle at 1200 rpm on land, 1000rpm in water in neutral, and 800 or so in gear in water.

Thanks Guys , I really appreciated you help, I have the idle working very good now, I had 5 turns on the air bleed idle screws, set them up to a 1 1/4 turn and now it really idles extremely well, Now I get 1100 RPM with the ear muff and 800rpm on the water at idle. Now shift very smooth also.
Thank you
