I've been working on this 1994 J150 commercial all summer as I work on my boat, now its getting near time for the fall bass run.
Engine starts ok but splutters through all the range,
it will not clear out ( on hose).
Idle is around 1100, has a miss that doesn't go away as throttle is opened.
New tank, line and bulb, running the VRO because it looks like the PO replaced the VRO pump.
Tested the alarm, it works, engine doesn't sound any alarms when running. It does this from cold.
So I seafoamed it, compression is an even 85psi on all 6 cylinders.
Then I rebuilt the carbs, they were clean anyway, but its done.
Then I spark tested it and found an ignition problem.
The 3 cylinders on the starboard side have blue sparks at almost 1/2 inch gap.
The port side top has a weak yellow spark, difficult to see in sunlight.
The middle cylinder gives one blue spark then nothing.
The bottom one seemed ok.
Could it be anything else besides plugwire, coil or powerpack?
I'm considering just buying all those parts to get it done asap.
I have a budget of around $1K to get it running right.
But I only have 2 weeks.
edit, doh!
I just swapped the known (middle ) bad coil with the bottom good coil, sprayed all connections w/ elec cleaner and now it shows spark on all coils. The only difference is its cold and the cleaner I sprayed on.
