1994 Johnson 120 VRO Spun Hub, Lower unit problem.....

Was out today tubing with friends and all of the sudden engine revved up and no more power. Got my first tow back from a friendly boater!

It won't even spin the propeller in idle now. I took the prop off just now and the actual shaft that sticks out of the back does not spin at all when you put it in gear.

Is all this indicative of a spun hub? I somewhat beached the boat last week in some shallow water I was not expecting while under way, but no symptoms of any damage until now.

If it is a spun hub, what do I need to do to fix it? Where should I order the parts from?

If it could be something other than a spun hub, what are the possibilities?

This is what really worries me...

When I put it in forward or reverse(motor off) I can spin the shaft by hand with some effort......

How can I determine what is a L/U problem vs a spun hub?

More not good news.

Disconnected the sparkplugs, put it in gear and started spinning the prop to see if the flywheel was spinning. I spun it for a bit freely with no flywheel movement at all then it kind of "caught" and I was spinning the flywheel for about 2 turns, then back to nothing.

I'm not exactly super mechanic(never really worked out outboards ever), but this points to not good things I believe....anyone have any advice where to go from here?

Can I get some help to confirm this is what I'm suspecting? L/U problem of some sort?

Yes, you have an issue.
Have you tried to manually shift it with the shift cable disconnected to rule out the cable and controls?

When you were in gear spinning the prop was the
prop shaft spinning with it? If it was drain gear lube
and look for metal in lube.
if lube looks good remove lower & check
drive shaft. It sounds like a gear problem.

No I haven't. I'm reading the service manual right now, but haven't quite figured out where they are talking about and how to do it yet. Just found it a moment ago. Any tips/advice are appreciated.
