Took the boat out on Saturday for the first time this season. The following happened:

1. Started great, idled at the dock for 15 minutes and went out onto the lake.

2. Opened it up and started out across the lake. Noticed my AMPs had dropped to below 10AMPs, and was continuing to drop.

3. Backed off on the throttle and the engine began to miss. So I killed the engine.

4. As soon as the engine is shut off white smoke, smelling of burned plastic begins to bellow from the engine.

5. I unhook the battery and remove the engine cover. The white smoke is comming from the flywheel housing.

6. I troll home on my kicker but since I needed to pull my engine up to get home on the trailer I plugged the battery back in... this is when I noticed that something is still pulling current from the battery, as it sparks when I connect to the terminals.

Does anyone have any ideas what happened and how much this is going to cost me?

thanks.

Eric

lundboat,
Make sure the flywheel turns by hand first(ignition off). Some electrical component of the motor has likely fried/shorted out.It MAY be the stator, regulator, powerpack etc.Check the starter for flywheel engagement.Best(and least costly to you)thing to do would be to take it to a Johnson dealer for testing/diagnosis,service.Don't dive into it without a manual and proper tools.Spending money throwing new parts in it if you do not know exactly what is wrong can be more costly and time consuming than the dealer. Please let us know what you find out.Good luck. :)
