Regulator output starts out at 14V but drops to 12.7V after warm up. This occured after I replaced a battery with an internal short, 10V open circuit voltage. Should I replace more than the regulator? How much $ can I expect to pay for a new regulator?

Check with the "www.theoutboardwizard.com" he has been very helpful to me. You'll get 10% off OMC parts. His name is Ralph. To partially answer your question; a rectifier/regulator is about $200. I'm not sure you need a new one...did you put a new battery in? Wish I could be more helpful. Electrical peoblems are tough. ;)

What you could also check and see, if you have wing nuts be sure that they are tight!!! i mean real tight!! not just finger tight!! make sure that the battery cables at the battery and on the motor are CLEAN and TIGHT!!!. also when you run your motor does the tach work?? if the tach works then chances are that the charging system is working. also when you power up and get to around 4000-4500RPM you should see aprox. 14.5V-15.0V. another thing that you could do is to get an inductive alternator gauge from a local auto store. and check and see with the boat up on plane turn on all of your electronics, and have a buddy cycle the trim up and down (be careful not to over trim!!) and check amperage. you chould see the amp gauge move. aprox. 15-25 amps MAYBE!?!? if you see it move then turn everything off, after a couple mins. the amps should decrease. hope this helps..

GOOD LUCK..

SP

I installed a new battery. I made sure the terminal connections were tight, no wing nuts.
The tach is reading OK. I am guessing when the old battery shorted it caused a problem with the regulator that appears to be heat related.
