I am about to purchase this boat form the original owner. He claims the title for the boat covers the boat and the motor. I know in texas there is a law on motors of a certain age must be titled and registered. my question is is the title for both the boat and trailer

Depends on where you are, Kevin. May also depend on the age and HP of the outboard.

Your best bet is to call the revenue office and get the definitive answer. I've heard horror stories of Texans buying rigs in good faith then being unable to make them legal due to a lack of appropriate paperwork. Here in Arkansas one can get it done in just about any situation as long as he's respectful to the gal behind the counter and can somehow prove he's cheating anyone. Don't think that necessarily applies in the Lone Star State. Better get it straight from the horsey's mouth. Good luck.

TPWD went to separate titles for boats and outboards a few years back...before that, one title/registration covered both as one recreation unit. I have separate titles for my boat and twin outboards, but the reg card I carry in the boat simply lists both outboards as registered/titled...I don't have to carry separate documentation for the outboards. He may have an older, out-of-date registration that covers the boat/motor as one, or he may be simply mistaken and behind on the regs. How old is the boat registration? If you get the outboard model and serial number, TPWD in Austin may be able to confirm that it has been reg with the boat before. I'd definitely check on that.
