Please help...ASAP!!!
I have a 1994 40 hp mercury mariner outboard motor. Everytime we start it up there is a loud continuous beeping. This happens even when the engine is cold. There is water spitting out , and the oil seems to be ok. Does anyone know what this problem is,,,,,and is it ok to be driven like that? Please respond ASAP as I would like to go out on it tomorrow. Thanks

I have a 90 hp so things aren't exactly the same. On the rear of the powerhead should be a screw in thing with a wire coming out of it. Mine is brown. Follow the wire to a connection and open it up. Beep should quit.

Take an ohmmeter and measure the wire going back to the sending unit in the powerhead and ground. If the engine hasn't been run, i.e. is cold, the circuit should be open. If shorted, your overtemp sensor is shorted. If that checks ok, then your warning module is bad.

The wire that went to the overtemp sensor goes to the warning module if you have a problem finding it.
