I have a boat with a 1994 mercruiser mag 454 Previous owner told me he used 10w40 looks like a automotive filter in it. What is the correct oil/weight to use as well as what filter does everyone use? Engine has 300 hours on it.

Thanks.

Do you happen to know the engine serial number in case you'd like a parts catalog for reference points?

The oil type and filter is almost endless for these engines and almost turns into personal preference....

If he ran 10-40, personally I'd try to keep it the same.

I've used the Merc/Quicksilver 25/40 it holds its viscosity well and did well in an oil analysis I did on my 4.3 V6. I also use their oil filters as well. Many do use the 15W/40 which is certified for both gas and diesel engines. I used to use single weight straight 30 or 40 but switched to the 25/40 some years back. If this is a flat tappet engine Lucas Marine is marketing a line of marine motor oils that have more zinc than typical, even the diesel oils have dropped in zinc, as well as Merc/Quicksilver's oil. I have a roller tappet engine so its a non-issue but if you have a flat tappet I'd consider the Lucas stuff.

Rotella works great as does the marine 25w 40s and ive also used mobil 1 15w50 if hot you have 10 psi oil pressure for every 1000 rpm you are running itwill live a long happy life

Keep in mind, the oil really should be a marine type oil, or a race engine oil, or just an oil with a high zinc content in a correct viscosity... Your 454 Chevy truck shifts into overdrive at ~55 mph and then cruises at 2k RPM or so.. Your 454 boat cruises at 3,500 or so unless you wanna go fast and then 4,500-5,000 for however long you might afford to let it drink that much. Realistically it's abuse is close to race engine abuse.. The other thing with marine oil is the zinc content will be much higher than even Rotella T.. Valvoline VR1 has the highest of zinc in conventionally available oil's but it's about the same as Mercruiser oil which can be bought any time of the year at Walmart

The filter is the thing that does not need to be "marine".. The filter for a 1989 Corvette, or most other SBC/BBC vehicles will be the right filter
