Hello, I have a 1994, 90 hp outboard Mercury, that I want to prepare for this season. I tried to take it to a marina for the tune up but they told me to wait another month (they are busy) so I thought that I could do it myself. Can anybody tell my what I should do - oil change, sparks bla bla- or maybe someone has a manual ......
Thanks

I take it, from your comment about changing the oil, that it is a 4 stroke? Or do you mean the lower unit oil?
---------
Depends on what was done to it to winterize it and what kind of fuel system it has (carb, fuel injection). If they gooed it up you may need to clean it out; but that may not be that big of a deal.

Need the questions answered.

Re: 1994 mercury 90 hp

Let's back the truck up.

Too many years flying by. You said '94, my brain was engaged in '04. Sorry for the error.

My '94 sales brochure says you have a 2 cycle, 3 cyl, loop charged, oil injected, 3 carbureted engine.

Dispose of any old gas and get some new.

There is no engine crankcase so there is no oil to change there.

The lower unit oil should have been changed at the winterization.

The engine should have an oil tank under the cowl and you don't have to change that (blue colored) TCW-III 2 cycle oil.

Go to an autoparts store (NAPA, AutoZone.....) and buy a can of Sea Foam and a spray can of Deep Creep. Add the Sea Foam to your gas tank per the instructions on the can, and use the Deep Creep spray:

Pull the sparkplugs. If clean fine. If gungied up, get a new set.

Spray into the sparkplug holes while spinning the engine with the starter.

Replace (reinstall) the plugs and wires.

Remove the plastic (air deflection baffle/cover/sound reducer) cover off the front of the carbs so that you can see the air inlet of the carbs.

Spray some Deep Creep in each carb throat with the throttle wide open. Try to get equal amounts in each carb.

Put the shifter/throttle controller back in N and spin the starter. The engine will probably lite off. Turn the key off to kill it and repeat the process of spraying into the carbs.

Spin it again and if it lights off again (it should) kill it again.
-----------------------
Put the cover back on the carbs and anything else you may have removed.

You're done.

Go thru your normal starting procedure and pay attention that once the engine starts, within 30 seconds, water is coming from the tell tale opening on the starboard side. Even at idle, it should be a good firm stream. It will increase as rpm's increase.

Let it idle for a few minutes, and goose it a few times, (not over 2500 rpm unloaded). Stop the engine. Restart it and the restart should be immediate.

Put the cowl back on and go to the lake. Grin

You should be good to go.

Start it up on the hose with muffs and make sure it runs. Should smoke and burn off some old fogging oil. Make sure you're using new gas. Change the sparks plugs if necessary and go boating. There shouldn't be much to do in the spring (or summer if you're in Canada).
