1994 Oil Discharge

I have a 1994 Mercury 225 that I bought a year ago. There are holes on the port and starbord sides of the exhaust housing that discharge a fair amount of milky-looking oil after I've pulled the boat out of the water (and very likely in the water while underway). Each hole is located under the fin thats molded into the exhaust housing just above the lower unit (i.e. the holes are not part of the lower unit). The engine starts and runs fine; with no excessive smoking that would indicate too much oil injection. Is this an indication of another problem (a bad seal somewhere)?

Put a drop of the oil/water mix on your finger and sniff it. If it smells like gas and oil, it is fuel and could be normal, or a carb could be leaking a bit. If it stinks, it is gear oil and you have a leaking seal, likely the waterpump base seal or driveshaft seal located in the waterpump base.

Similar to my situation. My 70hp merc. was leaking oil from the same location. I just changed the waterpump base gasket and shaft seals. Good as new now. Pretty easy fix also.

While your at it might as well replace the impellar.
