How does the choke work on a 1995 100hp merc outboard. When I hit the choke I can hear the celonoid "click" but thats it. It isn't hooked up to any carb linkage and nothing moves. It looks like there is a fuel like that comes out of the top of the celonoid and goes to the carbs.
I can't get this thing started for the life of me. There is spark from all plugs and they are wet. I am not convinced the choke is doing anything though. The carb flaps don't move or anything when I hit the choke.

Thx in advance for the help.

the serial number for the engine is 0G243305

It's aprimer not a choke if you look you will find a solinoid with 3 hoses 1 is larger that the others and a yellow/black wire most also have a black ground wire that will be the primer solinoid

Re: 1995 100hp merc choke?

I actually have a '99 Merc that's 90HP that is at the boat shop now as we speak due to the exact problems that you are speaking of. The guy at the boat shop told me that my motor doesn't have a true choke type design that closes the flap on the carb when choked.

He said that there is a valve that warms up when the key is turned over three-four times and it regulates the gas flow. He went on to say that it's a bad design, but Merc won't admit it that it's a bad design. Take that for what it's worth....

Any hints on a procedure to get this thing started for the first time this year?

First does it click when you push the key in? if so then when the engine is cold pump the bulb till it gets hard, advance the cold start and with the primer system engaged turn the motor over till it starts then release the primer, you will have to be ready to retard the throttle so the engine do not over rev. The engine should start within 15 seconds if not rest the starter a minute and try again if it don't start in a couple try find a good mechanic

Ya it does click when you push the key in. And by advance the cold start you mean the fast idle got that covered. That sounds pretty basic Laddies thx for the help. I think I might of created the problem for myself. After a couple minutes of trying to get it started I forgot the kill switch. The plugs are out and I am letting it dry out incase it got flooded.
