After running our boat up on a sand bar we took the boat out of the water to inspect the lower unit. There was no visible damage, then we flushed the motor with ear muffs. Then we came back 24 hours later and noticed a small pool of an oily substance had leaked between the prop and the foot. Is this a seal problem or an exhaust residue?

Howdy, swampfrog.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I would expect some exhaust residue. That is probably what it is.

The best way to tell if it is 2 cycle oil exhaust residue or gear oil is to smell it. If it smells like gasoline or oil, it is exhaust residue. If it stinks(sortta like rotten eggs), it is gear oil.

The oil appears to be thick and black. It also has a light gas smell.

thank you,

After next time out, change the gear oil and inspect to be sure.

I ran the motor again yesterday with ear muffs, again the black oil showed up after sitting overnight, l'm sure its exhaust now..
I noticed when I shut the motor down exhaust smoke was coming from upper unit housing and botton of the power head, outside of power head enclosure, it seemed to be a chimney, is this normal to?:
