The motor: 1995 Merc 115 on a Ranger R72

When running in rough water or very heavy chop at a fairly brisk pace, I occasionally hear a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the lower unit, but that's just a guess. I've noticed that if I trim the motor down, the rattle becomes less frequent and only happens when I come off a larger wave. The prop is not coming out of the water.

While the motor has had this noise since I purchased it in 2001, I'm beginning to wonder/worry that there's an issue. Any thoughts or opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Now you've really got me worried, Rovernault! Can I ask what leads you to mention the crank bearings? And is there any way to check that?

I've done compression checks periodically since I've owned the boat, and all cylinders are right on @ 130 lbs. If it was the bearings, I doubt that would show up in a compression check--would it?

Any other thoughts? Thanks.
