I was told that i could change the carbs that the motor runs on till 1800rpms and it would be just like a newer motor. The guy said it would then run on all 4cylinders all the times. Is this possible or has anyone did it.

I have often seen this question asked, but I don't know of anybody that has actually done it.

I've always thought it was an interesting idea and I would love to hear from someone that actually tried it.

However, I have the same basic engine as you (1998 115) and I can assure you that when properly setup the 2 + 2 design works very well.

I'm curious about the idea, but I wouldn't pay more that $25.00 to try it, my engine runs wonderfully after 900 hours of run time.

Mine runs great also, a guy in our campground has his own shop and told me about it. Mercguy could you tell me how long they made these 2+2 motors, and where they olny 115hp. Also have they been just as dependable as the regular 4cyl engines.
thanks

Lucky,

Sorry, but I don't know the answer to your questions. I THINK they were made from around 1988 thru 2007 or so, but don't quote me on it.

I also THINK that the same basic design was offered in a 100, 115, and 125 trim using the same block (and 2+2 design).

As far as dependability goes, all I know is that i have 900 hours on mine and the only thing that I've done that wouldn't be considered normal maintenance is that I replaced the exhaust cover plate gaskets.

Most things I read about this engine are people complaining about the 2+2 design without really understanding how it works and how to keep it setup properly. I don't recall reading anything about broken blocks, thrown rods, burnt pistons, etc.

Maybe others will chime in with more details.

Once dialed in the 2 + 2 motors work so well, most uses would never notice.

The EPA mandated a reduced emissions at an idle which worked fine with this system as well as saving quite a bit of fuel when trolling at dead slow speeds.

Mercguy what type of maintance did you do besides the normal greasing, plugs, lower unit lube? Did you ever do the sink n link or whatever its called. I just got this motor in june because my 94 johnson 115 blew up less then a yr after i bought it. Its getting pretty expensive. I twice what my boats worth because of having to put the johnson then mariner motors on.

Please don't use the word "sink" - it's bad luck !! :) :)

At one point during the last 11 years my Merc was running poorly and I did a lot of work to find the problem. I did a "Link N Sync", rebuilt the carbs, rebuilt the fuel pump, and replaced spark plug wires. I found nothing wrong with anything that I took apart, and the engine ran exactly the same after I did all that work.

Then I replaced every bit of fuel line from the tank to the engine and I re-torqued the exaust cover plate bolts. The engine ran beautiful after that, but I changed 2 things at once so I didn't know which item fixed the problem.

At the time my assumption was that the loose exaust cover plate bolts resulted in lost compression and reduced fuel pump efficiency and that was the root of my problems.

Since then I've wondered if the problem was actually with my fuel line. When I did the work I took the pickup tube out of the tank and noticed that it had a stainless steel screen on the end of it. That seemed stupid to me because if it ever got clogged I would not be able to fix it on the water. An inline filter seemed a much wiser choice, so I ripped the screen off the end of the pickup tube.

I have noticed that my inline filter collects rust particals, probably from a bad fillup on the water. So now I wonder if the problem was because the screen was getting clogged and restricting the fuel flow to the engine.

I'll never know the answer, but it doesn't matter since my engine once again runs perfectly.

You will notice that none of my problems, and none of the probable causes have anything to do with the 2+2 design.
