I have a 1995 stratos bass boat with a 130 hp johnson. In october of 2003 I was doing about 55 mph on the calloosahatchi river in fla. All of a sudden my motor starts shaking and the motor stalls. I start it back up and I go forward with the throttle and completely forward with the throttle it would top out at 5 mph. I turn it on and off a couple times and It acts normal again. Well when I get home I do a compression test and every thing is fine. I take the boat on the lake a couple times and It does the same thing. I take it to a local johnson garage and he tells me the powerpack is bad. He changes it , I take it out 2 more times and it is still following the same symtoms. the last trip I knew when i started it back up that something was up and when i got home I did a compression test, #4 piston was gone. Ok . my motor is being rebuilt and the mechanic and my buddy who sold me the boat are telling me to disconnect the oil injection and go with the oil directly in the fuel. also does anyone have a recommendation for what octane fuel to use. Thanks Jimmy

Re: 1995 130hp johnson

Sorry for your problem, went thru similar issue last year. Vro supplies all cyl's, so your problem is probably due to a lean condition (carb)or ignition (pre-detonation) or carbon buildup, or some other issue. First thing to do is find out the cause before running again to eliminate future problems. Use fresh 87 octane fuel with a good TWC-III oil. What condition were the other cyl's?? Something as simple as floating debris in the bowl of #4 carb could be the cause of the symptoms you experienced before #4 dropped out. Let us know.
Good Luck

I agree with angus Jimmy....make sure the carbs are rebuilt as part of the engine overhaul and that the ignition components are all checked to be good. After the engine is complete, recheck the ignition components with the engine at operating temp. New fuel lines, IMHO, is also a must.

By the by....did you get any warning alarms before shut down? Possible you experienced overheating and the alarm didn't go off. May have the wrench check that possiblity.

EDIT: Sorry for being a bad host Jim.....Welcome to iboats forums!!!

Welcome!

You said #4 piston was gone. I'm sure it was still there but what was wrong with it? Details are key.

It almost sounds like its going into SLOW. Do your alarms work?

What spark plugs are you using? Be specific.

Fresh 87 octane is fine.

If you put "fast strike" in the search box and you will get a return from a guy in Austraila with a 1996 115 that explains the #4 problem better than I can. Apparently due to the design of a water passage all the water does not drain out completely which leads to condensation transfer into number 4 which takes out that cylinder. I have a 1996 Johnson 130 as well and am hoping to get some more info from some of the pros here to see what can be done to prevent this or even if it a shared problem 115's and 130's of those year models. Just curious what was your compression when it was good?

The 60 degree 115 and the 130 are totally different motors. The water in #4 on a 60 degree V4 has to do with the U tube below the powerhead. The 90 degree V4 loopers dont have that issue.
