Just aquired this motor. No water from pee hole. I removed the thermostat. Still no love. I put a water hose to the thermostat hole and was able to flush some water out of the intakes (got really wet).

I removed the lower unit and the impeller looks good. I was concerned that there were no gaskets on the water pump but looked at a kit on the net and there are no gaskets in the kit so I guess that's the way it is? I reassembled. Put it in a barrel of water. Nothing.

When running I get some exhaust out of the pee hole, but no water. Is it possible that the discharge tube on the water pump is not lining up with the tube going up to the head?

Yes.

Its also possible to have a perfectly fine "looking" impeller, that won't pump water.

Hard, scored, worn, not sealing right.

The impeller should be replaced every few years, even if it looks OK, standard maintenance.

I've often wondered the same thing because I've replaced several impellers that looked perfectly good only to see a significant improvement in water flow. Only difference that I can see is the stiffness of the fins (new ones more flexible) and straightness of the fins (new ones straight, old ones slightly bent).

That has to be what it is. I removed the lower unit just now and put it into a shallow tub of water. Then I put tape around the drive shaft spline and hooked up a speed drill to it. No water flow from pump.
I then took the water pump off again pulled the impeller out. It is as stiff as an old boot. Thanks for all your replies guys. I'm off to order a pump kit. Bill

You guys had it exactley right. The impeller "looked" ok, except the rubber was pretty hard. I put a new kit in today and now it's pumping great. Thanks to all who replied.
