I have a 1995 150 Johnson that my dealer says has a problem with water in the #1 cylindar. He said it is coming in from the exhaust port. He said that there is a known defect in some Johnson/evinrude blocks caused by a "porous casting" and suggests I trash this powerhead and buy a new rebuilt. He said the block isn't cracked but that it is a faulty casting, a common problem with this motor according to him. This is a powerhead purchased last year from a re-builder in florida to replace one damaged when run with a faulty vro pump. The rebuilder refuses to honor any warrenty. We heard a knocking when running this rebuild for a few hours which is why we had it torn down.
Do I go for a new powerhead? Can a leak between the water and exhaust be welded or epoxied in the block? Is there some surefire test to be certain that this is really the problem and to pinpoint the leak? Am I better off buying a block and moving these almost new rebuilt parts to a new block?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Lastcast2000

This is what is refered to as the "glue seam leak". It has to do with the way the pieces of foam were glued together durring the original casting of the block. Yes, it can be fixed. Have your dealer contact Precision Manufacturing at 800-237-5947.

I cant believe that the place you bought it from wont help. Unless the block has been stressed (run hot or stuck a piston etc). Everyone is well aware of the problem and they know which blocks have the potiental leak and those that dont. I dont like bad mouthing places but other people should be aware of guys that dont stand behind their work. I would post the company's name if it were me. Im not saying they should cover it completely since it is out of warranty but they should help.

OK. Enough said.

Good luck!

If it is a glue seam leak on #1, you can see it when you remove the voltage regulator and look over at the cylinder. This was an occasional problem back on the '91 motors, but very rare on later ones. A good epoxy can seal it and keep the motor going for a while.

Most of the time, water in #1 is from seepage from the thermostat seal getting underneath the cylinder head oring. This is fairly common in salt water areas on motors that have been improperly sealed or have severe overheat problems.

If water is coming in thru the exhaust port, that is something completely different. Pull the head and inspect the sealing areas first.

Thanks for the ideas. It gives me some hope. The $3500 bill plus labor for a new powerhead is a tough nut to crack. I wish the folks at soutwest were so helpful

If youre talking about Southwest Marine, they have a 15 month warranty so if you bought it a year ago it should still be in warranty. Especially since its a well known scenario. Did you talk to them directly?

Good luck!
