Setup is Wellcraft 238 Coastal CC 1995 twin (J150EXEOM) 150 ocean runners.

I have a factory manual. It says I need the OMC Optical Ignition Analyzer Tool. I've cant find any real data on tuning this engine here. (I've searched). CDI makes a tool for $200.00. Id rather fix this myself as I'm competent and I've got twins. Thats a lot of repair dollars over time. Do I NEED to buy this tool? If I NEED it I will. But its $200.00!

I just rebuilt the carbs and replaced all the reeds with OMC factory reeds on the port engine. I've re-assembled and adjusted the spark lever screw so the throttle cam and roller move at EXACTLY the same time.

The port engine runs, no backfires or misses but boggs when planing. It's Starboard mate will turn 3500 rpm (alone) at WOT and slowly build speed as the boat slowly planes maxing at? (Never tried running only one engine) . The Port engine turns less than 3000 rpm (alone) and cant put the boat on plane. Together they run 5700 RPM @ around 44 gps. They used to run 6000 & 50-52 gps.

Thanking you all in advance for your assistance.

Richard

PS - This is not a prop problem.

Make sure the throttle roller is not broken. The plastic outer diameter gets brittle and breaks off, leaving just the small diameter inner part. That can keep the throttles from opening completely.

You don't need the $200 tool. A timing lite works fine, even at cranking speed on that particular ignition system.

Of course, we are assuming that the compression is in good shape and the motor is firing on all cylinders and the carbs and jets are all flowing enough fuel.
