What would cause my motor to be hard to start when its first started in the am or been sitting for 4 or 5 hours? The only way you can get it started is to spray starter fluid in the carbs to prime the system. Once started it runs fine. I had prior issues with bogging. All this started after it was in the shop having carb kits installed. My mechanic said that he thinks the rings are worn and not pulling gas into the carbs. Compression and spark are good. I have not had it in the water under back pressuse to see if the bogging has cleared up.

STOP using the starter fluid. test your injector, when you push in your key the injector should shoot fuel into your intake manifold, if it is working it could be that the gaskets for your manifolds have swollen and closed off the passages. replace the intake manifold gaskets.

The only thing is that he said air was pushing through one of the cylinders into the carb. Compression was 85 on that cylinder. I will ask about the injector and manafold gaskets. Thanks for the help. Would it cause the bogging at low speed and when I tried to drive on the trailer? This all started after the carb kits were installed. Runs good at med/top speed, but will not push the boat on the trailer.

ok if you have a bad piston/rings, that is different. , what is the compression of the other cylinders?? if it all started after carb job..then maybe something was not done right..seems logical to me.

Compression is 95,90,85,85,90,90. That seems good to me for a 15 year old motor. I agree, the piston problem exhisted when it was running fine before going into the shop. Should he still check the intake gasket?

Either your mechanic is ill-trained, a master of doublespeak, or you have not faithfully posted what he said. Two obtuse examples:

"Air pushing thru one of the cylinders into the carb". This situation would imply bad reed valves. That would be unusual, but easy to diagnose.

"Mechanic said he thinks rings are worn and not pulling gas into the carbs. Compession and spark is good". If rings are worn, compression would not be good.

Your compression is acceptable. If the only issue is cold start c/o the primer system as was suggested, by Sparkie.

compression is acceptable..you may want to try a decarb (see secret file section)...and what I first suggested.

Sounds like your primer isn't working when you push in the key when cranking for cold start.
