1995 25 HP merc idols/revs but dies in gear

This motor has been to hell and back and allowed me to catch some huge fish along the way. Has always run perfect but now starts right up like usual (and revs just fine) but dies as soon as I go to put it in forward or reverse....like someone pulled the kill lanyard.

I tried pumping the bulb when putting it in gear but made no difference.

Probably its in need of a fuel pump rebuild and carb cleaning.

I kind of expected the carb might be gummed up....

any chance someone knows of a good online tutorial for cleaning carb or can reccomend good service manual?
