Unit: Seapro 305 190HP Mercruiser I/O 2BBL Carb
Hours on Engine: 544
Ignition is: Thunderbolt

Runs fine up to 4000 to 4200 but go over that rpm and engine begins sounding off mulitple popping sounds thru the carb.... eventually ending up with an occasional loud backfire.

After the backfire explodes, the popping begins again and if pushed long enough another backfire will occur.

After jumping ship 6 times and swimming back to the boat I decided maybe I better find out what the heck this was... my arms were getting tired.

So far...
Timing has been checked and on the money at 8 degrees BTDC

Replaced the following items..
Sensor in distributor
Coil, Wires, Plugs, Cap and Rotor.
Coil was leaking oil so started with that first.

Known problems:
Water in fuel..

Tank was less than 1/4 tank and had water in it when I purchased the bought 2 weeks ago, so I dumped 3 cans of water evaporator in it and filled up the tank with high octane fuel.

Tried to grab some jet fuel at the airport but the cops made me disconnect the syphon hose and tow my boat out from under the airplane.

Anyone have any ideas on my problem?
PLEASE EMAIL ME TO LET ME KNOW YOU POSTED A MESSAGE TO DO WITH THIS PROBLEM OK.
customerservice@401hosting.com

Thanks to all who reply.
CaptainHook - Rhode Island

305 backfire update...

I forgot to mention that fuel filter was changed as well.

Currently I am checking for weak valve springs - cam - lifters and compression check.

Water will make her pop...so will a lean burn, pull plugs and inspect along with your valve train inspection Let us know what you come up with I had the same symptom with my 350, which turned out to be water in the fuel, it took a while to get rid of, and a couple of fuel/water seperator filters over a short period.

Thanks for your input..
It sure had plenty of water in the fuel...
Changed the filter once now and about to do it again once it's out of the shop.

I'll let you know how the drive train ends up being..

Anyone else have any input? I know this happy face doesn't show em but I'm all ears.

Captainhook Just one more thought, try not to run the fuel tank to low, keep running off the top half, then pull and drain your fuel/water seperator after every half tank or so, this worked for me, of course another option is to drain tank fill with fresh gas and then start adding back drained fuel 2-3 gallons at a time, I also tried this, but my source of water was from the gas station itself, I since have been using another station.. so if in fact you are getting water in fuel you first must find the source of water.

Re: 1995 305 Backfire above 4200 RPM - HELP

The guy that owned the boat kept it at a Marina so had to fuel up at the neighboring Marinas that sold gas.

I trailer the boat so that will not happen again.
It had less than 1/4 tank when I bought it and have since changed the filter, filled it up with high octane and took it for a ride and there was much less popping until I hit above the 4200RPM mark..

I think once I go through all that bad gas it'll clear out but to make sure I'm having the mechanic check the compression, valve springs, valves themselves, timing, cam and lifters.

Hopefully all the internal parts will be fine. I'll let you know.

Captain HooknFinger

The boat is back from the shop now.
Hopefully we'll take it for a spin tomorrow and let everyone here know the results.

So far, engine sounds great.
Mechanic said compression was excellent... valve springs were a little on the weak side.
Carb was trashed with water damage so it was cleaned out and new gaskets installed.

New plugs went in as well.

I'll comment more tomorrow after the ride, if the weather holds out.

PB
