Hi Folks,

Yesterday we replaced the throttle and shifter cables on our fishing boat. We then hooked up the hose and test fired the engine. It started, and immediately began to rev WAY too high so I shut it down quick. The new cables are adjusted to the same length as the originals. There was also a slow drip of fuel from the carb area. Do I have a stuck throttle plate? Any help is very much appreciated as we have a fishing trip next week.

sounds as if either you have the cables adjusted incorrectly or your carb float is stuck and flooding it with fuel. Unhook your new cables and tie the throttle lever back to slowest (idle) position and see if it does it again, if it does, I'll bet your carb is flooding it with fuel. I have read some motors will "runaway" with the abscence of back pressure from being in the water (immersed) too.:)

As is usually the case, I screwed-up. I attached the throttle cable to wrong place inside the control unit. So what I thought was "idle" was "wide open". I'm learning that there's a good reason it costs a lot of money to have a boat worked on.

This is the correct configuration:
