1995 40HP Yamaha remote control problem

I have a 1995 Yamaha 40 hp motor that I took out for the first time this evening. The remote control felt stiff (I oiled it as best I could before I went) but when I tried to use the throttle I heard a snap and the lever went all the way forward but the motor continued to idle. Is there a cable I can replace or do I have to buy a whole new unit? As you may be able to tell, this is my first outboard. Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mike McGreevy

It sounds like the cable broke. You don't need to replace the whole remote unit, you can just replace the cable.

But to make sure you didn't break the throttle and shift parts at the motor or remote, dismount the control and take it apart. You'll see where the cables go in and hook up. Hopefully you didn't break the unit there. If all's ok then pull the cover off the outboard and you will be able to see where the cable hooks up there. Hopefully the carb linkage lever and shift lever will move with the cable unhooked.

Hey Forktail, Thanks for your reply. I took the box apart and, unfortunately, the cables were fine. There was a small piece of white metal broken off inside the box and, even though I took all the mechanical guts out, I couldn't see where it had broken. I guess it's time for a new box. Thanks again.
Mike McGreevy
