Going to look at boat with a 95' 70hp tomorrow afternoon. Any opinions and things to watch out for would be much appreciated. Any notorious shortcomings?

-Is this a model that Evinrude saw little need change (overcomplicate) since
the 70's
-Are parts fairly interchangable through the years. I am imagining that in it's basic form is it the same motor through the years.
-Do the lower units have the same guts?
-Electric or manual shift?

He's going to put the muffs on and run it. I'd like to be well armed with good questions.

A pre-emptive Thank you very much, Gentlemen and Gentlema'am's

Re: 1995 70hp evinrude-thoughts and opinions

I have a 1994-runs nice. I've owned several.

They were designed and introduced in the late 60's as a 55 HP. They topped at 75 HP.

The late seventies through 2000 are very similar but not exactly the same. Many parts do interchange but not all.

Look for:

1. Even compression on all three cylinders, over 100 psi.

2. Clean lower unit fluid.

3. Running it on the muffs proves nothing other than it runs. They will run surprisingly well on two out of three cylinders with no load (nuetral).

Compression is the #1 concern. If OK, the rest can be dealt with rather inexpensively.

I got the compression tester and gear oil out and ready to go.

This motor is an inline three. The number one cylinder is the top one? Why is it's compression valued more than the others?

the top cylinder will usually be the first on effected by over heating, the motor should have compression within 10 psi of each cylinder, I like to see it around 120 or higher but anything over 100 is ok. also look for signs of over heating like scorched paint on the head, it will look rough and bubbly. paint should be smooth and flat. I have a 1995 70 that was run hot, it has 130 psi on all 3 cylinders and runs great on the muffs, but bogs under a load the top 2 cylinders have damage to the pistons that is allowing the exhaust to leak into the crankcase. best to test run if at all possible.
