My 1995 90hp Mercury Marine Force will not idol. It will start and idol if I have the high idol lever up. But if I don't have the lever up it will try to turnover ,but it just will not start. While it does start with the high idol lever up, if I try to put the lever down it just cuts off. Please help I am really ready to get this thing in the water and run it.

Hey JP

I don't really know the history behind your engine ( other than 1995/90). If you just purchased it, check compression and spark. If they are good, check the timing, and do a link & sync ( sticky on home page) then try again. If you just bought it, Id replace the waterpump as well as the lower unit oil.

If you have dony some of the above, do the things you havn't to help diagnose. Sounds like it might just be the link & sync if it will fast idle- could be that the idle speed is set too low. More info would help...

Take a look at the "Sticky" Force and Chrysler FAQ and other great information. First topic listed at the top of this Forum. There you'll see a topic titled "Synchronizing Carbs and timing on a 75-150 Chrysler or early Force" by Frank Acampora. There is a step by step procedure on making basic adjustments to timing, idle speed, idle mixture etc. Try that first if you haven't already done so.

Sounds like it could simply be dirty carbs, a down cylinder, or idle set too low.

Start by checking compression, and spark.

Check the plugs to see evidence of lean condition or flooding.

Confirm problem before fiddling with anything.

Ok, here is what I've done. I have taken the carbs apart they are spotless. I have checked the plugs they fire great. It is trying to turnover and has several times, but it will not idol for some reason. The person I bought it from said he had adjusted the idol screws. At the time I had no idea what that meant. And now I am realizing that it is a big deal and could be the problem and I have no idea how to get them adjusted properly. However that may not be the problem i'm just speculating.

There we have it- look at the sticky on 'link & sync' by Frank Acampora and do this to your's. It sounds like it is the problem, and after you have done this, please post results.

I am 99.99999999% sure that this will resolve your issue.

The previous owner may or may not have adjusted the idle screw.
He may have adjusted the air/fuel mixture screw.

Go through the entire tuning procedure to make sure you don't do damage to the engine.

He said he adjusted the screw on the top of the carb that has the spring around it. I'm not sure what that controls, could you guys enlighten me? And help me further understand the problem. Thanks

That was quick- I hope the shop can sort you for a reasonable fee, and not trash talk and convince you to purchase a new/newer outboard.

They really are simple to work on, again, I hope the shop does the right thing by you.
