Hello All:
1995 Force 90 HP Motor quit running this weekend and I think I've got a bad stator. The stator is black and the part number is 398-8778A28.

Test for charging coils failed for low speed resistance (no change on meter) but the high speed passed at 109 ohms. All ignition coils passed resistance tests and the trigger passed resistance tests at 1205, 1218, 1209 ohms.

The stator test for resistance across blue and yellow shows no change on meter, the resistance between yellow to yellow is 1.2 ohms, and the resistance between black and red is 109 ohms.

My questions are:

1. Am I correct in saying that I can't really test the switchbox when the stator is failing these resistance tests?
2. Assuming that I need to buy a new stator, should I buy the Sierra Stator Kit or the CDI Stator? I would appreciate if someone could tell me the difference.

I appreciate all the help and I enjoy reading the forums. Thanks in advance...

I ordered the CDI stator. Hopefully that's the only thing that needs replaced!

I recently fitted the CDI stator to my 70hp and now its starts right on the button. I found when i removed the old (black) one, some of the windings had burned out, leaking the varnish - presumably on the low-speed coil.

Its worth checking your rectifier too. A damaged rectifier can ruin the stator. Mine was completely shot, so that got replaced with the CDI equivalent part as well.

Re: 1995 90HP Stator

Sorry for delay, I was on vacation for a while. I got my new stator however when testing it I get the same results for the resistance as I got on the old one. This leaves me wondering if my old stator is really bad.

CDI stator resistance:
yellow to yellow - 1.2 ohm
blue to yellow - open (should be 300 to 500)
red to red/white - 30.1 ohm (should be 28 to 30)
blue to blue/white - open (should be 500 to 700)

These tests are being performed with the stator on my desk so I am unsure if this stator needs to be mounted on the engine and grounded first. Do you think this brand new stator is any good?

Thanks

We have similar measurements on our Stator, it is an OEM Black unit # 398-8778A28, it only has two yellow leads for the charging circuit, a red, a blue and a black lead, the black goes to ground. Did you ever get the motor running.
The two yellow charging system leads are good. 1.2 ohm.
Our blue and red leads should probably both connect under the black plastic to the ground, the red to ground is 108 ohm but the blue has infinite resistance (open). Isn't that how your OEM stator read.?

If you have a problem you should post in a new thread.
Also need to know what were working on.
Year,hp serial# any info etc.
Oh yea Welcome.
