Hi all. I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a '95 Bayliner Capri LS with 120hp Force. Have not had it on the water yet and as a matter of fact have not gotten it home yet. It ran well with muffs on. Good floor and generally well kept. Very sharp looking boat. Wondering if it was a good first purchase. $4000 for boat and trailer. I haven't had a boat since 1974.;)

Being honest, I think that may have been bit much $$. But, condition is everything. A pristine Bayliner is worth more than a tired and beat up other brand.

The Force engine is the wildcard. Running on the muffs doesn't mean much. A compression check is the true state of health.

With all that said, Force engines are perfectly serviceable but they are older technology and tend to need a little more maintenance than other brands.

I hope it all works out well. Look below in the Forum topics for the Force section. There are some real Force experts that hang out there.

Happy Boating!

Over paid, with the old Bayliners the question is no if it has rot it's where is the rot.

By 1995, Mercury engineers got their hands on the Force engines. They changed to a mercury type lower unit, Mercury type ignition, Mercury 3000 controls and changed some of the regressive internal design with longer rods and bigger bearings. All in all, the engines became competitive and really produced their rated horsepower. However, like the high school girl with a "rep" most people follow the herd and "dis" the engines.

You may have paid a little too much, but in the long run, if you keep the boat for 2 or 3 years It won't make a difference---ESPECIALLY if you enjoy it.

You need not worry much about your 1995 120. Go! Have fun!

Thanks Frank. Very nice reply. I read a little about the history of Force motors while I was looking. I have always thought of Mercury as a good outboard motor company. As for the price...I don't begrudge the sales person for making some money. The NADA for this boat in my area was $4025 or close to that.

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

Frank is the man! No need to sweat the price if it works for you. Enjoy!

Sounds like you bought it from a dealer. Any warranty? That would be a little gravy for the deal.

Sort of a dealer in used boats-marina. Got him down as low as I could. All that I can do now is try for the floor mats and undercoating. LOL

I see your location is central NY. If you are going to splash in one of the Finger Lakes and need a crew, I volunteer! Heck, even if you don't need a crew, I volunteer!!

I'll keep ya in mind. I was brought up in Buffalo and boated alot on the river. Now all I really want to do is trailer and visit different lakes.
