So I have a 1995 Evinrude 150 60 degree model E150SLEOM engine, recently purchased in feb and have not tried it out yet other then in the drive way due to issues found running that way. The boat and engine are new to me as of feb/march this year. So I don't know the history with it. Large HP outboards are new to me as I have gas and diesel inboard background.

Just running in the driveway I found basic issues and started fixing them. I just went through rebuilding and replacing all of the carbs. and learned about the primer lever dumping fuel into the throttle body. Now that it's not dumping fuel every where I went and checked out the rest of the engine and can't get it to idle for the most part.

I started with setting the throttle body needles to three turns out. primer seems to work correctly. Did a compression test and all looked good there. 133 134, 125 125, 122 123. Strange how the top is higher and the bottom is lower on both sides, but still is spec. guess that is normal? New NGK plugs and all fire good with a spark gap tester. I plan on checking the timing but don't no what else to look for after that? There seems to be a lot going on with engine in general, meaning all of this type and not quite sure where to start after the basics?

Any suggestions on where to start with it not idling? I am thinking of getting an outboard mechanic to take a look?

Thanks,
Orlando

I have a 1998 Johnny 60* 150HPV6 (J150EXECD). I expects the specs to be pretty close to your motor.

The spark plugs need to have the "Q" type resistor (suppressor), or ignition issue can arise Therefore your NGK spark plugs should be the equivalent of a Champion QL78YC.

Initial carb mixture settings are 4 or 5 turns open depending on model.

Intermediate mixture is controlled by an air bleed orifice in the throttle bodies. You should clean it.

High speed mixture is controlled by the high speed jet in the carb bowl.

Idle timing is 6*ATDC, max spark advance is 20*BTDC. Setting those can be done with a timing light, however, you might look up the procedure on this forum.

I would recommend a service manual. marineengine website has service manuals. You will need your model number.

The NGK BR9HS-10 plugs are resistor but are slight different to then the champs. Yep thats where I got my manual from from, great site. The manual states 3 turns, but your probably right as it's running like it needs a few more turns. Going to pick up new plugs and re-adjust the mixture and check the timing. Then go for a ride, that might help clear things out a bit. But in my experience if it doesn't run great in the drive way it's not going to run well in the water. ...

Thank you very much again Chris, you have been great with the information. Will post back with the results.

I start at 5 and 1/2 turns with those 150's. You end up ~ 3 turns but it's easier for me if I start farther out.

Well you were right, new Champ. plugs and 5 turns out on the mixture did the trick! Purrs like a kitten now. Thank you Chris!

Did not realize that outboards are so sensitive on the mixture settings. Went from barely running to almost perfect.

This is NOT how you set carbs on a 60° motor. Motor has to be in water,in gear, warm and untethered to adjust,,5 turns is the intimal setting to get engine in bsallpark to run.

Thank you, I understand and agree.

Thanks to Chris for getting me to the point where I can actually do the above.
