I have a 1995 Evinrude E115TLERC that after about 5 minutes at idel at dockside the over-heat horn sounds. I shut the engine down for about 5 minutes and then head out. No more worries, no alarm. There is plenty of water coming out of both the exhaust and pisser holes.

Any ideas? Thanks

grizzz_man - A big welcome & join in the fun.

To your question - The alarm is telling you that it is too hot. This is usually caused by a water pump that needs to be replaced (recommended every 2 yrs) or clogged up thermostats or an obstruction in one of the water passages. You need to replace the pump, tstats & backflush. All can be done at the same time & I would not run the motor until you do.

If what you are saying is correct, why would the problem rectify when you increase speed? Also there is a good flow of water coming out of the pisser and exhaust.

If I "launch and go", the horn never sounds. This is what is the puzzling part.

Thanks

You can disreguard the warning and "launch and go" as you mention but you increase the risk of doing damage to your motor.

You might read the principles of operation contained in most shop manuals to understand how these systems work. For example the impeller may be pumping water but the blades may not flex as they should due to age. When this happens you are not getting the correct flow or pressure that your motor needs. Another example would be if you have a partial, but not complete, blockage in a water passage. The cooling water still flows and comes out the pisser but does not adequately get to where it needs to get. A malfunctioning thermostat would do the same thing.

Your call - The parts should cost less than $100 to do the impeller & tstats - The cost of rebuilding a cooked power head is a tad bit more.

Thanks so much for the information.... and points well taken. I will be taking it in on Monday.

Keep the sheets full of air and the bow pointed to somewhere you want to be.

-grizzz

Grizz,

Your 115 is a 1994 crossflow model, not a '95, sorry.

The hot horn is sounding because the thermostats are sticking closed after it sits for a time or the air bleed hole is plugged up, very likely. When you first fire up, the air cannot bleed away from the lower position of the thermostat housing, and that means water cannot flow to the thermostats, so the motor starts to run very hot. When the alarm sounds and you shut down, hot water makes its way by gravity to the thermostat housing and opens the t'stats. Or you may have t'stats with corrosion that stick, and after a hot engine, they open up and work fine from then on. These problems are very common due to the design of the thermostat housing and its location on the lower aft area below the powerhead. Get the new factory stainless steel thermostats, #434841, and get the housing cleaned out and new grommets for the pressure relief valves. If the tech files very small air bleed notches in the white plastic valves, the motor will bleed off the air quicker and also drain the housing better when you are done with the motor.

hello
yep what seahorse says. years ago the t-stats had a small vent hole and the plastic housing had 2 vents. now now vents on the new desighn t-stats and 1 small vent in the housing. I usually open the housing vent to a 1/8th hole and use a dremmel to vent the t-stat or buy the sierra part that already has it. but the problem you describe is classic for crossflows. especially saltwater crossflows
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt - - yes this is a saltwater motor. While most of the summer it is used in freshwater (never have a problem there to come to think of it).

Seahorse - why did you say it was a 94? The docs I have all say it is a 95.

Thanks guys.

-grizzz

The letters "ER" in the model number show that it's a '94.
