Hello everyone, thanks in advance for your replies. I have a 95 evinrude ocean runner 150 that was running great until I had to change cranking battery due to it wanting to die by the end of a day on the water (also running live well pumps). I got the new battery hooked up although i'm sure I had it hooked up wrong at some point (all the wires are black). I had it hooked up right the first time and got nothing, figured i had it wrong, hooked it up the other way and still nothing...had it right the first time but had a bad connection. I was sure I'd fried something but I finally hooked it up the right way and turned the key. It fired up...awesome. Didn't realize I had a problem until i went out on the water and had no power to get on plane.
As it turns out only the port side bank was firing. No spark at all on the starboard 3 cylinders. I did some research and started replacing the cheap parts first. New (used) power pack, and new optical eye, disconnected the shift interrupter switch...no change. Has to be the stator. BINGO...stator is burned up. 2 of the coils on the starboard side look like they are almost burned to ash and the rest have lots of the insulation melted off. Sent off for a new (used) stator, installed, motor fires up first try and sounds great. Just to be sure i disconnected the port side plug wires to make sure the starboard is firing and the starboard side is firing like it is supposed to...shut off the motor, plug all wires back in, start up and sounds great then drops the starboard bank never to return...I pulled the flywheel back off to find the stator i just installed already starting to melt the insulation. More research.
Now I think that I have it figured out. I thought I had it figured out before too. So here I am. I bought another stator and a new rectifier. They are in the mail. I think that by switching the terminals backwards i shorted the rectifier and it is overloading the stator causing it to run hot??? I am too scared to install everything and have another stator burn up. Am I on the right track here or is there something else that could be causing this?
Oh another thing that is possibly related, possibly not. My Tach had recently been acting funny on the few trips leading up to the changed battery. It would sometimes work fine, sometimes drop out completely, and sometimes give me readings that were clearly wrong.
