1995 Evinrude smoking at low/idle speeds

Hi all, the last time I used my boat/ motor, 1995 70hp Evinrude VRO, seemed to run fine but when I slowed to troll or put in neutral it sure seemed to smoke alot more than normal,sometimes I would have to give it some gas just to get out of the smoke!! great for the bugs but I think I have a problem,Is it time to diconnect the VRO system??<br />I has never done this on prior trips just the last 3??????

first go though fuel system and check for fuel restriction.fuel pickup-fuel connector-old fuel hose.

Have you ever replace the fuel lines, external and internal, or the inline fuel filter? When's the last time you've rebuilt the VRO?<br /><br />My guess is fuel restriction, does it still get to WOT at the same RPM's. I am sure it is slight over oiling if any, because if it was too much it would just stall and foul your plugs. Better to have a too much oil problem than not enough!

Quin...Is this the first season you have run this boat/engine, is it new to you or are youhaving this problem after years of owning this boat?

Thanks for all your replies, I have owned the boat for 4yrs now and this is the first time I have had this problem.The VRO has never been rebuilt as far as I know,original hoses,filter also has never been replaced, I never thought this could cause the problem,why wouldn't it smoke at all speeds then? I am unable to test things right now due to the "hard water" up here in Canada but am just trying to get some info before spring,lots of great info guys,thank you for all the help.

You did'nt say if you are running on a remote, or built in gas tank. If in a built in tank, you could have a restriction in the anti-siphon valve. Any restiction in the fuel line will cause the engine to draw in more oil. Being a vacuam pump, it will draw in whatever is easier to lift, fuel, or oil. The service manual will tell how to make these test's. You will need a low reading pressure, vacuam guage for these test's. It would take to long to explain these test's, that's why it would be best to have the manual. I really don't know if the after-market manual's would go into detail, go with the OEM manual if possible, if not! come back, and we will try to help you out.

The boat does not have a built in tank, it uses a factory plastic 6 gallon one with the quick coupling ends. What is a good method of checking these ends for leaks? Or should I just order a new fuel line/filter? <br />Thanks for all the replies.

Come spring,or thaw out,use the boat and watch oil consumption.If you are going thru a LOT of oil,it probably is a fuel supply problem.<br /><br />A few years ago I had a customer say he was using about 5 times the oil he should have.My idea was it couldn't idle if it was that bad.Called OMC,and was advised that yes it can idle on that amount of oil in the gas.Think about it,your spark at the plugs will jump 7/16 of an inch.<br /><br />Found the fuel filter had worn a hole in itself,and was sucking air.The pump 'made up' for this by pumping more oil.<br /><br />DHP
