I bought a boat today with a known engine problem Its got 120psi on 5 cylinders and 30 on the 6th. It idles fine and even gets the boat on plain fine and then it seems to just flood out and quit. I'm just wondering if there is anything to look for before pulling the block and rebuilding. Thanks

Look for the reason cylinder failed, the early V-6's had block problems that would dump water into #1 cylinder and sometimes(rare) #2. Keep running it and its going to cost ya more to repair....

The compression is low on the lower left cylinder looking at it from the rear. I've not run it at all. I'm describing the running per the previous owner. Any ideas?

pull the cylinder head, hope for a bad gasket.

There are no head gaskets on that mtr. Just O-rings. I'd opt for a blowen or badly scuffed piston.

Re: 1995 FastStrike compression problem

Pulled the head today and I have a scuffed cylinder wall. What is the best or most practical way to repair this. I can take the block off and strip it down no problem but is there a better way. Should I do just the one cylinder? The other 2 on that side are perfect it seems. What could have caused this that I need to look out for so it doesnt happen again? I dont know the history because i just bought it this way. Thanks!

Re: 1995 FastStrike compression problem

well there is no way to fix it with out pulling the block apart...

you have two choices and they basically are :

bore the one hole and buy a new piston and ring and pin...

and put it all bacl together...

That is what someone did to a ocean runner 115 i have...

or you can have them all honed and measured and if in spec install new rings on all the other bores and just do the bore and new piston on the one hole..

if the holes dont meet spec..then you are boring and buying new pistons for all those that dont meet spec.. figure about $40 to bore each hole and $12 to home and a new piston with rings and pin is about $100 average

i tore down my 60 degree eagle blcok 90 hp that had one knocking piston..

piston was shot..

when i sent the block out I told the guy to just bore all the same size and ill but new pistons and rings for each hole and I'll feel better...and it is going to cost me about $400 extra for that peace of mind.

the time and gasket set and misc costs are all the same if you do one or six!!!

you have more holes...its a gamble

my thought is..if you are tearing it apart all that way...fix everything that isnt just as it is supposed to be...

because taking the motor off and tearing it down again is a major PIA

not to mention the lost time

some guys might just hone some and stick a new piston in that bad hole and skip the boring..and live with the compression he gets..

good luck

Sounds like good advice. OK, then. I've built automotive engines, small engines and aircraft piston engines. Is there any reason I cant build one of these? I've got a factory service manual on the way and plan on building it myself unless someone here tells me different. Just let me know guys. Thats why I'm here. Thanks so much, again!

if myou have rebuilt those others, you should be fine with the outboard...

the only difference that is glaring might be the corrosion and stuck bolts on the outboard if it was used in a salt water enviroment for very long.

Re: 1995 FastStrike compression problem

I will not rebuild one of these engines(60 degree) unless block is pressure tested as they can start leaking after the rebuild( I ate one)..

Hey FaztBullet, where can I get that done? We are both in the Nashville area. Who would you recommend doing the machine work? Thanks

where are we talking on the block as a problem leaking area????

I have one out for reboring now... this would be important info for me

thanks
