I was trying to help a friend get his boat in the water today but we couldn't get it started. I disconnected the fuel line at the top carburetor and it spits fuel when the motor is cranking. I pulled the spark plugs and grounded it to see if there was any spark but I couldn't see any...Can a timing light be used on a force engine to confirm if there is any spark? The motor seems to crank over fine but it doesn't even sputter. The run switch was on and I checked it with an ohm meter at the key switch and it is working fine. We only have a Seloc manual and it doesn't tell you what wire would be the kill wire at the motor so I don't know what to check for a fault.
The motor ran good last fall when we pulled it out of the water. I don't believe he did anything to prep it for storage.
The gas is ok since the kicker runs off the same tank.
Help!

... hiya reboot,

couple entries from this troubleshooting site -

http://outboardparts.com/troubleshooting/troubleshooting16.htm

1) Disconnect the white and blue kill wires from the CD and connect a DC voltmeter between the kill wires and engine ground. Turn the ignition switch on and off several times. If, at any time, you should see voltage appearing on the meter, there is a problem with the harness or ignition switch. AT NO TIME SHOULD YOU SEE BATTERY VOLTAGE ON A KILL CIRCUIT

IF NO FIRE ON ANY CYLINDER:
Disconnect kill wire AT THE PACK. Check for broken or bare wires on the unit, stator or trigger. Using the Fluke meter with the CDI 511-9773 Peak Reading Adapter, or CD-77 and CDI 511-9770 piercing probes, measure DVA voltage of the stator between the output wire sets. With everything connected, reading should be approximately 180 volts or more. Resistance readings between the stator wire sets is (OEM 980-900 ohms/CDI=250-300 ohms). Disconnect the rectifier. If the engine fires, replace the rectifier.

Thanks azlakes
I will try what I can with tools available, I have a fluke meter but not the Peak Reading Adaptor. That link you sent is a good site. They mention a low battery Voltage could also cause this. I know the battery was just fully charged but I did not check the terminal voltage when under load. It cranks over fine but just maybe...

Still no luck.
Still no spark. Voltage when cranking is over 11volts.
What wires at the control box go to the kill switch?
I want to open the circuit to see if I get spark.

Well we were not having any luck so my friend brought it to a shop. It ended up with them replacing the Stator and Voltage regulator...I damn near passed out when he told me the price....$1000.
Better him than me!
I think I will do all of the work on my own motor.

He's on Holidays as of tomorrow. So it was better for him to get it done than to wait and keep trying things. He's happy. Poor but happy.
