Guys,

I did a compression check this afternoon. I have never done this check before, so I tried to be consistent with each check. Here is what I got: Top- 130, M- 130, B- 130. My gauge only reads by increments of 5 so I could be off a little. Are these numbers good for my motor? 1995 Force 90HP, Serial
OE122348. One thing I noticed when I took the plugs out is that the middle plug was not dark or wet and looked brand new. The top and bottom were dark and a little wet. I changed them last week after the initial problems of lost power. Will a motor run on 2 cylinders with the symptoms I mentioned: about 6 to 7 less mph and about 700 less rpms? I guess I should check for spark next? Guys, I appreciate your help!!

It could be your fuel pump. There is a TSB out advising that it be rebuilt using the kit from Mercury. The original pumps have rubber check valves that have a tendancy to curl up on the edges due to ethanol gas. The kits come with plastic type check valves. They are less than $20. I had the same problem and that fixed it.

Bill,

Thank you for your help. I ordered a fuel pump kit from iboats yesterday. Do you think this will work or will I need to get the specific one you mentioned from Mercury? Thanks again!

As long as it has the replacement check valves you should be good to go.

I'm not sure how a fuel pump would effect just one cylinder. It feeds all the carbs equally. Unless, it is leaking raw fuel into just one cylinder.

If one of your spark plugs is real clean that is a sign of cooling water intrusion. That ccan be caused by a leaking head gasket or exhaust cover gasket.

I agree but he needs to get rid of those old check valves before going any further. I recently went thru this with mine.

I had the same problem and symptom on my 1995 Force 90.

Plugg the middle carb and clean it good. Reassemble and I bet you'll be back in business.
