Hi, this in in regards to my father-in-laws boat which I get to use while restoring my SC.

He purchased the boat this spring, his first boat ever and I have only had outboards. Boat is almost mint, engine runs perfect, but there seems to be some growling coming from the outdrive. I had it out last night and it seems lounder than the previous time out. The sound changes when steering and also when the drive is trimmed up or down a little. I don't notice it as much at cruising speed. Seem I read somewhere that in '95 this may actually be a Volvo outdrive?

Anyway, he will probably take it in, and I'm just wondering what should we ask/tell the mechanic, and what should we expect? Hope this isn't to broad a question.

Thanks.

Time to pull the outdrive and check the ujoints and gimbal bearing. Bet you will find water in the bellows.
What is the engines full Model number?

Thanks. I don't have the numbers with me. Will the engine number location be obvious? What would be a rough idea of the cost of parts you mentioned?

I am mechanically inclined and wouldn't have a problem doing this with a manual. How much of a pain will it be since on the FourWinns the outdrive is tucked into the back of the boat?

New gimbal bearing, u-joints, bellows, gasket & alignment tool {which is a must have} you're looking at a rough estimate of a couple hundred in parts. Not to mention that you'll need a slide hammer to pull the bearing. You can probably rent of those.
