My 1995 Johnson 130hp was running WOT when it squeaked and shut off. Upon restart it acted like the battery was low. It did it once more and when I got home I checked compression. What was previously 120psi on all 4 was 120, 135,130,30. I have come to the conclusion through the help of all of you that that one cylinder got hot, piston expanded and caused overheat/shut-down. What caused this problem and how can I prevent it on the 1994 Evinrude 120 that I am going to buy?

change your impeller every 2 years, check your thermostats. if salt water motor, you must flush, but you have to flush long enough for the thermostats to open.

also you have to keep the carbs clean, no gas, means no lube to the cylinder.

if it were mine, i would convert it to premix fuel.

Ok, I'm in Ohio so purchasing it then paying shipping is out of the question but with compression readings that high I would pull the head off, spin it over by hand and take a good look at the cylinder before I would consider it junk.

Ignore my earlier post... I misread the 30 as 130 on the low cylinder.

Could be as simple as a blown head gasket. Take off the head and look. You have nothing to lose at this point.
