I'm at about my wits end with this motor. I'll try to be as descriptive as possible and not take up too much of your time.

Issue: Doesn't rev up when in gear, gets around 2k rpm +/- shutters and doesn't rev up. Runs fine in the yard on muffs or in the water and revs up quickly in neutral.

Diagnosis thus far:
-I began with changing out all the plugs and gapping them to the correct amount.
-Replaced a rusty and faulty "coil pack" due to no spark.
- Replaced Primer Ball
-Removed all zip ties on fuel fittings and replaced with hose clamps
-Installed brand new OEM Non-VRO Fuel Pump
-Acquired new "Spark Dwell" Handle with the spring inside from local boat yard. Old one was broken and not functioning correctly.
-Ran boat in the water on auxiliary tank gravity fed to new fuel pump.
-Adjusted Spark Dwell Handle while in the water at idle and WOT.

Back Story:
I acquired this motor from my father in law after if sat in a field for roughly 2 years. I installed it on my newly restored SeaOx and the first sea trial day it ran fine for the first 10 minutes. I was able to get up to roughly 4600 RPM without trimming out the motor. (I unknowingly had low fluid in the tilt trim motor and it wasn't functioning). Once I came off plane it had no power and we though the broken spark dwell handle was the culprit. We ran the motor with the cowling off and he adjusted the push rod by hand until the motor was running correctly once again. I went to a local scrap yard and got a new handle and installed it. From that point on when ever I go and give it more throttle it gets up around 2k rpm and fell flat on its face unless someone was priming the ball on the fuel line. I will add with someone priming it it still wouldn't get to over 4k rpm like it did the first day out. I replaced the fuel pump with a non VRO OEM one and put it on an auxiliary tank and it still is expressing the same symptoms. It gets up around 2k and shudders and shakes and doesn't run right. I've done a spark test on all the plugs and it's getting spark. I think that's it.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a timing issue. I've got a timing light and will be testing it tomorrow. Additionally, I've changed all the plugs and tried messing with the spark dwell knob while its running at idle and WOT. Nothing is improving this issue. I'll also add that I have all new gauges for the motor and the temp gauge is still not working. I've seen several forums mention the S.L.O.W. mode but I'm unsure if that's the issue being that it ran really well the first day it took it out and there are no alarms going off. I know for sure the alarm works because before I deleted the VRO I was getting a vacuum alarm because the oil hose was disconnected and not blocked off. I have cleaned all the connections and replaced every fuse I've found on the motor. I'm still concerned as to why the temp gauge doesn't work but the tell tale is working correctly and the water coming out is not super hot.

I appreciate any insight ANYONE can provide. I'll be checking the timing and the compression tomorrow. I'm just confused on how a motor that ran well before and sat would all of a sudden lose its timing and now run like absolute ****.

Thanks again.

2 years sitting....have you serviced the carbs ???

as a bare minimum have you cleaned out the High speed orifices the bottom of the carbs ...just behind the lower carb bolt

have you checked all filters incl. tank pick up ??

Check the fly wheel key.----Post the compression values here.----There may be issues with crankcase compression.----Crankcase compression PRESSURE is what drives the fuel pump.

The carbs have been checked and cleaned. The bowls and needle seats were super clean. No signs of contaminants or debris. The tank is a brand new Moeller as well as all the fuel lines and filters. I'll check the compression tomorrow and report back. Thanks for the help.

The temp sending unit could be bad....sending an intermediate slow mode even though it's not an overheat situation.

Compression should always be your 1st go to though.

don't mean to be picky but exactly was done on the carbs. were all orifices cleaned and air blasted. the HS orifice plugs closely inspected & open .

if at one point hand pumping caused a reaction one could assume fuel flow may be the issue.

even some fuel hoses have been known to impede fuel flow due to degradation.

I took the carbs apart, cleaned with carb cleaner, inspected for debris and then reassembled. I took quite a while I might add not being in a contolled environment and trying to get every piece of dust, or lint floating around in my garage from getting inside. Hopefully these help. At first when priming the fuel ball it would pick up rpms which made me believe it was a fueling issue. Hence basically installing brand new parts on 99% of the system.

lint and dust will do absolutely no harm whatsoever. its not like rebuilding a hydraulic assembly! obviously im talking about lint/dust barely visible from say a shop towel.
