1995 Johnson 130 Power Pack or Timing Issue?

My outboard has some issues. It doesnt idle real well which isnt that big o a deal to me. I can get going and the motor runs great for the first 2-3 minutes. WOT runs well and then it will start to miss and "surge" and if I let off on the throttle a little it will clear up. It runs perfect at mid throttle but not at WOT. Could this be a power pack issue or is it a timing issue. I know its not fuel because I have cleaned tank, new fuel lines, rebuilt carbs, new plugs, and I have checked for spark and it is good on all cylinders. What could this be? PLease help!!!!

The fuel primer bulb..... does it have a tendency to flatten out somewhat at WOT?

Well I leterally just replaced all the hoses and priming bulb 2 weeks ago...I check it quite freqquently and it remains hard. The motor really "bounces" when it cuts out. I really dont think it is a fuel issue but Im no mechanic.

How did you check your spark ??

Well I rigged a jumper on the starter solenoid to turn the engine over and just grounded the plugs out so I could see spark. Is this an ok way to do it or do I need an actual gap tester?

The plugs will tell you nothing. You need an open air gap spark tester set at 7/16".

Ok sorry I didnt reply yesterday it was raining all day. I checked the spark with an open air spark tester set at 7/16" and I had spark still...so what would be the next thing to check on this thing?

You stated "The motor really "bounces" when it cuts out."

If you mean that the engine jerks hard on the transom like it is hitting a submerged object... it would be jumping out of gear and then right back into gear. Is this the sensation you're encountering?

If so, easing off the throttle would ease up the pressure on the shifter dog and gear shifter lobes which would allow the engine to stay in gear at the lower rpm.

Well I thought that but if it were doing that wouldnt it do it all the time at WOT...it only does it when I run WOT for a bit and then it starts to do that. Its not a hard jerk but seems that the engine cuts out and then picks up, and then again right afterwards. Wouldnt I be able to hear it if it were jumping in and out of gear. A while back the spark advance adjustment screw had somehow rattled out. If that isnt set right would that cause this to happen?

Even if the spark timing was 10? off, it wouldn't "bounce".

To me it looks like the power pack has a temperature dependent issue in the rpm limit circuit. Symptoms and age would be suitable. But don't replace it yet, continue with trouble shooting.

If you have a second person on board, you can connect a timing light to one spark plug and watch if the sparks miss when the problem occurs. Be sure the cables are routed away from the flywheel. With the cowling off it may take a longer time for the miss to come.

Alternatively, if you are alone, you can use a cheap transistor AM receiver and a headphone as an "audio spark monitor". Tune the radio between two stations, set max volume, put it in a plactic bag, lace the bag together (in order not to soak the radio with spray water) and place it close to the motor. Listen to the music (RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR) with and without the miss.

HAHA ok. Is there some way to test this temperature dependent issue on the power pack or what? I think Ill use the timing light. Can you borrow a timing light from an auto parts store or can I get one fairly cheap? Do I need to test it on all the plugs or just one? How does a timing light work exactly? I bet its the power pack issue because when it starts to do this it would die if I didnt let off on the throttle some. Sounds to me like Im losing spark when this is happening...but Im nooooo boat mechanic!!!

I had the same problem a few years back on one of my 95 150's - it was the temperature dependent issue. After the pack heated up it would begin to miss. Started only happening once in a while and continuously got progressively worse over the summer.

Replaced the pack and she purrs like a kitten.

Good luck - If you replace the power pack get one of the new ones from CDI - they run very nicely.

Awesome ya I have seen it is getting worse the hotter it gets outside. Where can I find one of the CDI power packs? Is there any way to prevent this from happening or not?

Re: 1995 Johnson 130 Power Pack or Timing Issue?

I think its just an old age thing. I'm slowly breaking down when I get hot now too :)

Search online I know ebaiscpowerdotcom sells them - for my 150's their $219. not bad for essentially a new ignition system. I'd change the other inexpensive parts too - spark plug wires, plugs etc.. Then at leas toyu know when they were done last :)

PS Other onliners have them too. Just make sure you find the proper part number and do a search.
