After ebuilding my 150 Johnson it smoked excessively when cold but when warmed up it ran reat. Now, a few weeks later it has become almost impossible to start unless I prime the carbs with straight gasoline. Very rich oil/gas is flooding out the carbs during cranking and it appears that the engine is over lubricated. During the rebuild (piston melt-down from total water pump failure) I tried to follow the service manual for the hose connections but I wonder if perhaps I have a routing problem. Could I have a VRO failure. Mine has 4 wires.
Wayne

Hey Wayne...(my fishin' bud is also Wayne)...welcome to iboats.

Take a good look at hose routing from where the oil and gas come into the engine and look for any kinked lines that is causing restrictions. It's possible the seal between the gas and oil section of the pump has failed and your getting your gas over oiled.

Here's what to do. Mix a gas can of pre-mix, 50:1. Pull the oil line from the nipple on the lower engine pan and cap it off snug so it don't suck air. Disconnect the four wire harness from the pump at the amphenol (rubber) connector to disable the alarms. Run the engine like this and see if that solves the problem. If so, the pump may have gone south or you have some flow restrictions. Don't worry. Won't hurt the engine to run it like this.

Keep us posted.

Thanks OBJ! I'll try out your system as soon as I can get out of this office. I'm confident the engine will run great on the 50:1 but I'll check it out to be absolutly sure. I'll recheck all the hoses against the service manual and look for restritions. I will keep you posted.
