I have a 1995 Johnson 150 60 degree V-6 loop charged engine. When it?s cold and the first start of the day it will idle the best but still not great. When it?s been run a while and turned off for a bit and then restarted it?s hard to get it to idle and it stalls/dies when taking off. You can push in on the key and does not seem to help. Pumping the bulb does not seem to make any difference. The longer you let it idle the worse it gets. If you can get through this rpm band the engine runs great. Low to mid-range, mid-range and high end it does well.
This is a new motor for me this year so I don?t know when the carbs were rebuilt last. It has new spark plugs and around 95 psi on all cylinders. (I don?t think this one is a fast strike with the higher compression).
I have a 96 175 fast strike Johnson motor that?s an identical build as the 150, and off and on since it was new has had the same type of idle problems. It has been known to idle if you raise the fast idle lever but bog down and die when you go for neutral and take off. I have rebuilt the carbs on this motor two times over the years.
Do these motors have an inherent idle issue? Are there any tricks to make them idle and take off right?
If it?s time to do the carbs on the 150 then that?s where I?ll start but just thought I?d ask.
Thanks
