Working on my first boat restoration project, and I picked up this 1995 Mariner Magnum 40 HP for $1,200. I discovered the model number is 7040412dd and I am working on getting my hands on a factory owners manual.

I am very new to boating, so I apologize if this comes off as naive.

I am struggling to identify if my engine is a two or four stroke. I am assuming two, however, there is a larger reservoir of blue liquid on the motor itself.

Again, I hope to learn more through my local Mercury dealer whom I am getting the manual from. However, my curiosity is killing me and I cannot find any satisfactory results online.

If in fact a two-stoke, how do I prepare the fuel?

Thank you!

It would be a 2 Stroke. Put gas in the tank. The Oil in that Reservoir, will be added by the Oil Injection/Mixing System. If you want to Verify that the Oiling System is working, you could put a couple of marks on the Oil Tank, and run a couple of tanks of Fuel with a 50:1 mix, then with boat and engine in the exact same position(tilt of boat in both Directions, and engine in exact same position, recheck the oil level in the tank. If it has dropped than it is working.
