How did the job go? I MAY be doing the same thing. I am a bit afraid something will surprise me and I'll be stuck.

it went very easy.it is done, and very cool.I'm glad that I did it myself.saved $185.00.Even with the parts on hand, they wanted that much.the only thing that I see that could go wrong,is if you had a very bad impeller, and the pieces of rubber got caught. In there somewhere.Mine was all in one piece though.

Thanks, I am gaining courage.

What gear do you put shifter in before dropping LU? Does it really matter?

What was hardest thing to line up on reassembly or anything else?

This is sure an interesting forum...wish I had seen it years ago.

Re: 1995 Mercury 40 hp 4 cylinder Impeller Replacement.

I just bought the impeller ay NAPA for $20.

NAPA did not have the kit, and I reasoned that the engine gets routine exercises every month on the muffs, and runs only in fresh water, and there is a steady but weakened stream at hi-idle now -- all encouraging me that it is likely just a worn impeller and hopefully a sound gasket.

I am gonna risk doing a change on my own. I am legally blind, but a glutton for punishment! Any advice as to how to gently separate the impeller housing from the gasket that separates it from the wear plate?

Signed: apprehensively eager.
