1995 OMC Cobra outdrive Gear lube

Hello,

I need to change the gear lube on my 1995 OMC cobra lower unit. My service manual specifies an OMC brand lube, but since OMC is no longer in business I was hoping to find an alternate substitution. Does anyone have any information about this?

You can still buy that specified lubricant at any Evinrude dealer.

Or, you can buy any good 80W90 as would be used in most outboard gearcases.

75w90 Mobil 1 Synthetic is a good choice and easy to find.

Additionally, you can also use Volvo Penta, Mercury High Performance, and Amsoil (all synthetic) gear lube.

What about using royal purple 75/140 full synthetic? The reason I ask is I have a 5 gallon pail of it sitting here paid for. I will use it if its ok but dont want to put my drive at risk. Thanks!

I wouldn't use 75w140 in a sterndrive unless my owner's manual specified it. Because of the colder operating temperature a marine application and it being a heavier oil, it may 'channel' rather than properly 'lubricate'. Although Royal Purple 75w140 is a top line oil, it's typiclly used in limited slip differentials. It has a friction modifier that may affect your outdrive's shifting characteristics. I'd stick with 75w90 or 80w90 GL-5 synthetic.

I have had the best luck with the Mercury High Performance 90W.

I just had my OMC Cobra drive rebuilt and the company that did the rebuild installed and recommends Volvo 75-90w GL-5 synthetic gear lube.
