The problems:
Cold starts, especially when in the water, can be tough. I usually have to give the engine gas to get it started when in the water (not sure why this is any different then when it is on the hose). Once it is warmed up, it will fire right up unless it has been idling for a long time.
After idling for a few minutes, whether in gear or in neutral, the engine wants to die. If I put it in neutral and rev the engine, I can keep it running.
Also while trolling for a few minutes last month, I had a problem where the engine went from 1700rpm to 1000rpm, sounded like it was loading up very badly with a somewhat muffled 'popping' sound. I gave the engine more gas and it hesitated at first and then 'took off', like it was on 2 or 3 cylinders and then jumped to all 4. This has only happened once. I'm thinking the plugs may need to be cleaned or replaced.
It runs pretty well at high speed, reaching 5500rpm.
I have searched the forum and am wondering if a carb rebuild or cleaning 'how to' has been posted.
I have my shop manual on the way, but figured I may be able to get what I needed on here.
For the record - the fuel filter and lines are new and good, not leaking air into the system. The engine did sit up for a few months with no fuel in it, and the old fuel was drained. It was during springtime here in TX, so it wasn't cold. I did not 'winterize' it or put any sprays into the cylinders or carbs while it sat.
I'm thinking the carbs just need to be cleaned or rebuilt, and the plugs replaced.
Any info is appreciated.
