Went out with our (new to us) 1995 Four Winns Horizon with Volvo Penta 5.0 for second trip this past Saturday. We weren't out more than half hour when we noticed the boat smoking badly. We turned off the engine quickly. The plastic rings were burning. Every boat around came to help. Boat mechanic on lake towed us back - said it may just be impeller? Any suggestions from all of you experienced boaters? Oh, our first trip out was short and engine kept missing or hesitating when excellerating. Boat mechanic we called told us to run the gas through - probably bad gas. Is there a possibility of our engine being ruined?

A boat that has not been used for awhile is a prime candidate for burning up a impeller. Mine went the first ride of the year (luckily at the boat ramp). When mine went there was a there was a big black cloud (like a diesel truck). You say “ The plastic rings were burning.” What plastic rings? How long do you think you ran it before noticing? If you let your manifolds run dry for to long you may have another problem.

Well, we thought that it was these rings that were causing all of the smoke. We first noticed a burning smell then quickly turned around to see smoke seeping out the back of the boat. We noticed within a minute and turned the engine off. Unfortunately, we don't know how many minutes passed with the temperature gauge being too high.

Possibly burning the riser connectors to the exhaust system. Without water in the exhaust they begin to melt and could smoke through the exhaust as well.

Well, we talked to the mechanic after he looked at our boat and he thinks that the water pump/impeller and two hoses which were burned need to be replaced. I guess we will find out this weekend...
